What is a domain name? When you think about what a domain name is, in general, you think that a domain name is what you type into a browser or you think it’s a site or a web page.

When you think further and consider that computers only communicate in “1’s” and “0’s”, what is a domain name then?

Domain Name Tip #50

Did you know that most domain name registers are free to set up?  Often people wonder why they have to sign up for an account in order to get a domain name but what many first time domain buyer don’t know is that most domain name registers are free and that you need in order to purchase a domain name.

When you buy a domain name, from us, GoDaddy or anyone you need to set up a domain name register or have one set up already.  This register is like a holding place for your domain name and it is where the seller of the domain name will send your domain too.

We just want to point out that most domain name registers are free because many people get scared and think that this will be another expense or there are some other registers out there charging people, when there are free alternatives out there.

Don’t be scared of a “Domain Name Register” and don’t think you have to pay extra for it.

Domain Name Tip #49

Your domain name is going to be your email address. You might not have thought about it but, yes your domain is not only where your website is going to be, it’s more than likely, where you’re going to get your mail.

Your domain name, let’s use, Get Domainer, so if you want to contact us, you would use info@GetDomainer.com. If you have a long or confusing domain name, you’re just making it more difficult to contact you.

As we know the less distance and the easier it is for your customers or potential customers to reach you the better and if your domain name and email address is long, you’re just making it harder.

Domain Name Tip #48

Domain names are like real estate and we all know that with real estate it’s all about location, location, location as far as domain names are concerned, the location, location, location is extension, extension, extension.

The domain extension has to be, and can only be, dot-com.  Now dot-com domain names are just like oceanfront property, there is limit supply of the good ones.

Like real estate, in general, a good domain name can become more valuable with time and can make a wonderful investment.

Domain Name Tip #47

Don’t let a domain name restrict your business to one industry or one product.  A restrictive domain name will keep you from expanding into other products or even leaving a specific area or geographic area.

If you have a multiple industry domain name you’ll never have to worry about being restricted.  We use to call these domain names, brandables, but now we’ve started calling them Multiple Industry Domain Names, we think it’s a more fitting name.

Domain Name Tip #46

Your domain name is your introduction to potential customers, your first foot as it were.  As the adage goes, you never get a second chance to make a second impression.

Your first impression, i.e. domain name, needs to be targeted specifically for your customers.  That means, if your company is a new and exciting IT tech company, than your domain name needs to reflect that and if your business is about boating or water sports it needs to reflect that as well.

Your domain name and your company needs to be in simpatico for the best first impression!

Domain Name Tip #45

Getting a domain name for your business is extremely important. It doesn’t matter if you’re the smallest business in the smallest town of a rural area you need to get a domain name.

You may just want to get that domain name to post your hours, location, phone number and maybe put up some of the items you sell.

Young people do not use the phone book and many areas don’t even have them, if you want anyone to know about your business you have to get a domain name for your business.

Your domain name should suit your audience. What do we mean by that?

If you’re a cool business or a business that is catering to young people you should have a

cool or interesting domain name.

If you’re dealing with people’s money, you should go for a safe and secure sounding domain name. People need to believe in you, they need to believe in your domain name.

If your business is for kids like a preschool or after school program, you need to design that name to sound fun and appealing to them.

You domain name, many times is your introduction to your audience, make sure it is something that they can relate too. Get a domain name that your audience connects with and one that they want to know more about.

Domain Name Tip #43

Does your domain name tell the story of your business?

What are you telling people when you’re giving them your domain name are you telling them what your business is or what it does.

If you know our blog, you’ll know that we always say the shorter the domain name the better, but even then it needs to say something about you.

You only have a few seconds for someone to understand and comprehend what your domain name is and what it is that you do, if you tell people a story, they’re more than likely going to be able to remember it.

Domain Name Tip #42

If you’re looking to get a domain name on the secondary market, don’t fall in love with the domain name so much that you over pay for it.

Think of the secondary market as an auction, set a price in your mind that you’re not going to go over and stick with it.

We know that you love that domain name and you think it’s the perfect, one and only domain name for your new business but believe me, you’ll find another domain name that will work just as well.

The domain name after market is a great place to get a great domain name at a great price, it’s also a great place to get carried away and spend too much, tread carefully!

Domain Name Tip #41

This is a tip for a domain name and company naming all on in one. One of your tips in the past has been to avoid naming your company too similar to your competition, a common mistake made by many entrepreneurs.

You should always match your business name to your domain name so if you run into trouble with your company naming being too close to your competition, you’re going to have to change both.

You may even have to hand over your domain name to the company which is suing you. Check the official United States Patent and Trademark Office to make sure, you’re in the clear.

Don’t lose your domain name and get sued at the same time!

Domain Name Tip #40

Did you know that some letters are more difficult to type than others?

It’s the truth, and who knew? Think about it, Q’s are in the far left and P’s need to be typed with the left pinky finger. Z’s and X’s also have to be typed with the down stroke of the ring finger of the left hand.

Some people believe that these letters should be avoided in a company name so that when people are entering it into a browser they don’t misspell your company name and get sent to a different company.

We really like names with x’s and y’s and z’s because we think they’re interesting and standout. It’s up to you to decide which way you want to go!

Domain Name Tip #39

How long is your domain name?

If your domain name is longer than nine or ten letters, it’s time get back in there and rename your business and get the corresponding dot-com.

We’re really not kidding.  Every letter you are losing customers and you may be losing them to your competitors.
Don’t believe us?

Try misspelling your domain name in the browser and see what you get.  Also try shortening it down to its most basic elements and see what you get.  You may just have your socks knocked off!

Domain Name Tip #38

Your domain name is more than likely going to be your email address as well.

That means that when you’re going to have someone contact you, you’re going to have to spell out your name then the domain name.

If that doesn’t discourage you from going with a long domain think about typing it out, or what that long name is going to look like on the bottom of a business card.

Do you really want to be youname@thisiswhata-longdomainnamelookslike.com?  How is anyone ever going to remember that to contact you to set up a meeting or order your goods and services!

Domain Name Tip #37

If you’re getting a domain name for a larger company or product it may be a great idea to buy alternate spellings and additional domain name extensions.

Again, if you can afford the accusation price, however expensive it may be and the yearly renewal price, you may want to consider purchasing every alternative spelling domain name to your business name.

Let’s use Get Domainer for example.  We may want to consider buying GetDomaner, without the “a” and/or GetDomianer with the “a” and “I” switched.

Lastly you may also want to consider getting the other domain name extensions like, the .net and .org.

Domain Name Tip #36

Specific or Brandable domain name, which is right for me?

You’ve heard us talk about brandable domain names and specific domain names but which one is the right one for you?

Well that really comes down to what type of business or website you have.  In general, if you’re looking for a forward sounding domain name because you’re a forward or innovative business, then we say brandable or multiple industry domain name.

If you on the other hand, if you have a more traditional business, than maybe a more traditional domain name is the way to go.

This may be an overly simplified explanation but it should really give you an idea of the direction you should be going with your domain.

Take the domain name development process seriously. 

Your domain name will be your company name and you’re going to be with it for a very, very long time.

Now is the time to study, balance and work on your domain name.  Learn from the masters, take tips from blogs, read our tips and work it out.

Taking the domain name development process seriously because it’s worth the time and effort.

If we’ve learned anything about businesses and domain name is that a great domain name is worth, it’s weigh in gold!

Domain Name Tip #34

Most people don’t realize how many three and/or four-letter abbreviations or acronyms surround them each and every day.mwje - 4 letter domain name

Don’t believe me?  Off the top of our head, think of airports like SFO, JFK, LAX.  These airports have now expanded outside the physical airport with their call letters onto merchandise, and recently making the jump to TV programs.

Do you think these airport codes would make for a great domain name?

How about all those social media acronyms like, TTYL or YOYO (Talk To You Later and You’re On Your Own).  We’re seeing those letters on clothes, even pillows and blankets lately.

Domain Name Tip #33

Sleep on your domain name ideas!

Say you’re coming up with domain name and business name ideas and you’re down to three or four options.  You like them all and they all have their pros and cons.  Which one do you pick?

Sleep on it.

Some time away from the list is not a bad thing.  We know, you’re ready to get started tomorrow and you need to by the domain now, we’ve been there before ourselves.

Time may make you look at your domain name ideas differently.  We’re not saying procrastinate or never make up your mind.  We’re saying put the list down for tonight and make the decision tomorrow.

A clear head may be the best thing to determine the best domain name for you and what you’re going to doing with it.

Domain Name Tip #32

The best domain names incorporate your key goals and attributes right in it.  For example, try incorporating what it is that your business or product does the best?

Is your product faster, is your business smarter, does your business have better customer service?  Or, are you more technologically savvy, or are you on call 24/7, what is it that separates you, from your competition and add that into your domain name.

Your domain name should be your company name and your company name should be a beacon of light to your target market, WHY they should come to you over your competitors!

Domain Name Tip #31

Consider what your domain name will look like when you’re incorporating it into your business.

You may look at some of these brandable domain names and think that they’re not too excited but… with the right colors and the right font these domains can pop and really grab attention.

Remember these aren’t just your domain names they will also be your company name, business name or products!

Domain Name Tip #30

Consider getting the misspellings of your own domain name. 

Have you ever mistyped a domain name into your browser and you went to the wrong website?  Was this website a competitor of the site you really wanted to go to?  Well we’ve all done it and that’s why we suggest, at some point, you may want to get the misspellings of your domain name.

More and more we’re starting to see domain poachers.  These poachers go out and look at big businesses and buy common misspellings of their domains; for example Cok instead of Coke, Macies instead Macys, BigLotts instead of BigLots or even GetDomainr instead of GetDomainer.com.

When someone mistypes the domain and is directed to their site, sell or poach the business.  This is particularly important if you get a domain name with a commonly misspelled word, have a difficult company name and matching domain or a long domain name; all of the things we advise against (but it happens to simple words as well).

This other site may be your competition and they’re syphoning business away from you when people go to their site.  Some domain poachers even design their site similar to yours and people may not even realize they’re not at your site.

Getting the extra domain names will cost you extra per year but you have to weigh that against the possible loss of sales to the other site.  This is something to consider when buying your domain name or even later on down the road.

Domain Name Tip #29

When you buy a domain name for your business, you’re not completely done. 

Now you’ve got to go and check if you can register that name at all of the media touch points you’re going to have your brand.

Because your domain name should be your business name, you have get it registered at YouTube, FaceBook, Google+ and all the other places your target market will come across your brand.

It’s not that bad if the exact match has been taken, you can expand that name but, don’t lose it if you can get it, so don’t wait.

Domain Name Tip #28

Did you know you can back order a domain name?

While you’ll find thousands of domain names which are ready to be used and built into some great on Get Domainer we’ll have to admit it, we aren’t the only option for domain names.

If you’ve found the domain name of your dreams but it’s already taken you can back order it.  You can fill out your info and if or when it becomes available the domain name register will let you know and move it to your account.

Now, you may have to wait a long time or it may never even become available but its a great way to get that domain name of your dreams, if you don’t mind waiting.

If you’re looking for a domain name now, where you can start using it, you’re better of getting one here (wink)!

Domain Name Tip #27

Ever think of inventing your own language to get the best domain name for your business?

It doesn’t sound as crazy as you may think, so many of the great domain names have already been taken and even if you can find one, good luck getting the Trademark for it.

Here’s where inventing your own language and your own word will come in handy.

There’s a good possibility that the domain is available and if you invent your own word, you can Trademark it and no one can touch you!

Not that a crazy idea after all!

Domain Name Tip #26

Ever think of Goggling or Binging your domain name ideas before you buy or use them?  You really want to get as much information about your domain name as possible before you make that giant step.

If you see a lot of people using similar domain names, within the industry in which you plan on using it, you may want to reconsider that name.

Similarly, even if people are using similar domains but are not within your industry, find out what it is that they do.  If it is something that you don’t want to be associated with, maybe you need to find another domain name.

You don’t want people making the mistake of looking for your domain name and coming across something you want nothing to do with or even one of your competitors.

Domain Name Tip #25

Think of every way someone is going to come across your domain name.  Now, consider what your domain will look like in all lowercase letters with no spaces between the words.

This is often the way people are going to first come in contact with your domain name and sometimes, you may find that this has some unfortunate consequences.

You may notice that, when pushed together into a domain name, your company domain name may spell something unintended and it may be greatly harmful to your business.

Recently we saw Therapistfinder.com and really had to think twice until we realized they were Therapist Finder and the The Rapist Finder!  This may be something you never thought of before but don’t let this happen to you!

Consider every way someone may encounter your domain name.

Domain Name Tip #24

A great domain name is one that clearly identifies your core strengths over your competitors.

By looking at your domain name, do your potential customers know why they should use user business over your competitors?

Is your target market aware that you’re faster, smarter, better than your competitors just by looking at your domain name?

Your target market should know instantly by looking at your domain name why they should choose you, if they can’t maybe you should reconsider another domain name!

Domain Name Tip #23

A great domain name is one that communicates the core goals and strategy of your business.

Does your business give back to the community, does your company do something better than your competition, are you faster, do you care for your customers or does your product make life any easier?

Your domain name is the best way to communicate the core of your business, don’t miss that opportunity.

Is your domain name unique and differentiated?

easier to build a brand around.  If your domain name is overly specific you’ll be corralled into one industry, product or service.

The broader your domain name the more room you’ll have to expand, grow and even sell off parts of the business down the road.

Remember you’re not buying a domain name for today or tomorrow, you’re buying a domain name for the future!

Is your domain name unique and differentiated? 

Often we’ve found, and researchers have discovered, that most entrepreneurs when they begin to look for an online presents, start looking within their own field to domain names and business names they like as inspiration for their own.

We love this idea, however, to often what often happens is that your domain name and company name begins to look too similar to the competition.

The best domain names are the ones that stand out and can be easily differentiated from your competition.

Don’t be afraid to be different and have a unique domain name!

Domain Name Tip #20

If you’re looking to buy a domain name that’s SEO friendly, you’re about five years too late.

Years ago, you use to buy a long tail domain name, which is rich in key words, and get picked up quickly and shot to the top of search engines.  That was years ago!

Bing, Google and other Search Engines realized this and fixed their algorithms.

Now you’re just much better off getting a short and memorable domain name.

Domain Name Tip #19

Can you communicate your domain name easily?

Think about being at a convention or in the boardroom, can you quickly tell someone your domain name and do you think they’ll know how to spell it.

Does your domain name have alternative spellings?

Is there a “PH” instead of an “F” or some other substations?

Will someone leave that convention or boardroom and go home and misspell your domain name?

Think about where you’re send possible clients, you sending them to the wrong site or worse your competitors?

Leave the funky spelling domain names to someone else!

Domain Name Tip #18

Don’t wait, if you see a domain name you like for your business or product, buy it and buy it now!

Good domain names go quickly but great domain names go in seconds.  There is nothing worse than to decide on the perfect name for your next business or venture, you found out the domain name is available but by the time you go to register it’s gone.

If you see the domain name you want, get it and don’t wait you’ll never forgive yourself.

Domain Name Tip #17

Should I buy the other domain name extensions when I’m starting my business?

Heck, if you have the money and you can afford it, sure why not but, the dot-com is the only MUST have.

We actually get this question quite a bit, if you buy only the dot-com domain name, how can you stop someone from grabbing the other extensions and doing something with them similar to your business.

Well, nothing is really the answer but, because dot-com is the go-to and unofficial, official domain name for all businesses, if someone takes the other extensions and tries to do something with it, they’ll only be sending traffic to you.

Again, if money isn’t really an option and you want the security of no one else doing anything with the domain name, sure go for it.

Domain Name Tip #16

Did you know that you can put your domain name on auto renew?

We get quite a few questions about how long people can hold onto a domain name after they purchase one from us.

The answer is as long as you like.  As long as you keep the domain name registered, it yours for as long as you like.  If you wish, you can pass this domain name down from generation to generation, as long as you keep registered and paid for.

Most domain name registers now have an “auto renew” tab where, once ticked the register will continue to bill your credit card and you never have to think about it again.

Don’t worry, you can keep your domain name for ever!

Domain Name Tip #15

It’s not a bad idea that if you’re considering several domain names for your business that you snap them up while you have the chance.

While you’re deciding on which domain name you should buy for your new business or product, someone may jump on the name and buy it.

If you can afford to buy the names, don’t let your momentary indecision stop you from getting the domain name you want, buy the domain name now!

Don’t miss the opportunity to take a step back and get a clear look at your domain name ideas.

You may have come up with a list of domain names for your business or product, even have some favorites or frontrunners but put the list down for a day or two.

Stepping away from your domain name and business name ideas may give you some clarity.

This clarity may change your favorites and may give you a new perspective on which domain name will work best for your business.

Domain Name Tip #13

Avoid domain names with multiple spellings or silent letters.

The more ways that things can be spelled the more chances people will get confused and spell you domain name the wrong way.

This will just lead people to the wrong site which may be your competitor.  This also means no silent letters, you might be able to spell it but no one else will.

Domain Name Tip #12

Do you know where has your Domain Name been?

Did you ever think about what site was on your domain name before you bought it?  If not you should because it could affect your current business.

Search Engines could punish you if your domain name was an adult site, bridge site or a spam site.

Run your domain name ideas through a search engine to see what else comes up; check your domain name history.

If the domain name has a storied past, maybe you should move on to another domain name.

Domain Name Tip #11

If you were thinking about using a domain name with a hyphen just forget about it.

We’ve found that hyphens just confuse people. People get confused as to where the hyphen goes or if every word has a hyphen between it and the problems go on and on.

We understand that you can get the domain name you want if you put hyphens in it but no one is going to find you if you do.

People will forget the hyphens in your domain name and just go to the website without them.

Domain Name Tip #10

If you think that domain name experts just pull great domain names out of a hat or out of the thin air than you’re really wrong.

It can be a long slow process to name a company or product and develop the perfect domain name.

If you’re looking to create a great domain name and company name, you may want to consider using what’s called “Mind Mapping.”

This is a great way to get you to think creatively and to develop a creative name.

Domain Name Tip #9

You may be wondering how people will know what you do when your domain name and company name are so short.

Get Domainer would recommend that you simply add a tagline to your logo.

A good tagline can do great wonders to your business name.

The beauty of a tagline is that when your business expands you can just redesign your logo.

Redesigning your logo is far better than changing your domain name and company name!

Domain Name Tip #8

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, when it comes to domain names, length is key.

The more words in a domain name, in general, the less the value. 

One word domain names tend to be more expensive, keep adding words and they become less so.

That said, if you’re buying a domain name with multiple words, consider how those words go together, do they fit?  Ice & Cream fit together better then Ice & Salt!

Domain Name Tip #7

What’s so important about getting a dot.com domain?

You might wonder why you should spend the money on a dot.com domain name when I can just get a .net or .org for half the price.

Do you remember a few years back when OverStock.com decided to re-brand and jump on the “.co” bandwagon? When they changed their website from OverStock.com to O.co they lost up to 61% of their customers.

Everyone one understood that they were O.something and everyone assumed they were O.com and not O.co. OverStock had to buy O.com to get the 61% of their customers who were going there.

I’m sure the owner of O.com when they realized what was happening made a lot of money from OverStock.

Don’t get any domain name extension other than a dot.com!

Domain Name Tip #6

Your domain name should be your business name which is your brand.

Your domain name and brand is the first thing anyone is going to notice about you and you had better make it a great first impression.

Remember your domain name is going to be your brand ambassador and it’s going to be what people are seeing and typing into their browser when they want to reach you online.

Make sure your domain and brand are clearly in line with one another and easily communicated.

Domain Name Tip #5

Don’t buy domain names that are just misspellings of other popular sites or companies, thinking that you’ll get the runoff.

That’s not only a bad business practice but it’s a sure way to get a cease-and-desist letter.

That said, make sure if your business or product is a hit, that you buy every domain name variation of your business name.  It’s worth the few dollar investment to keep people who do this away from you.

Domain Name Tip #4

Interesting domain names are the ones that people are going to remember.

The longer the domain name and the blander, the more the possibility that people will simply forget your name after they hear it.

You not only need a domain name that will resonate with your target audience you also want one that will stick with them.

With domain names, think interesting, think clear, and think memorable!

Domain Name Tip #3

It’s not just your domain name that has to be interesting.

A domain name will be the most effective when designed into an interesting logo.

You domain name should look as interesting as it sounds.  That said, your logo should be easy to read so make sure your logo can be read quickly and from a good distance.

If your domain name is going to be on a billboard, the sides of a building or even on a jacket or some other product, you only have a few seconds to grab people’s attention with an interesting domain name and logo, then people only have that brief moment in time to read and comprehend what you domain name is.

Your domain name will probably be your business name or product name and you should picture that name on the side of it.

How will your domain name look on this side of your product? 

Can your domain name be incorporated into the design of your product or how will it look in lights over your door.

How will your domain name look once it’s designed into a logo?

There are a lot of thing to consider when you’re picking your domain name, but how good it looks should also be a consideration.

When you buy a domain name for your business there is a lot to consider.

This domain name is not only going to be your business name but it is going to be your email address as well.

Consider giving someone your name and them having to type it into an email.  Think of how your name is going to look in front of it as well.
